Caiaphas

Caiaphas High Priest of the Temple

Caiaphas served as High Priest of the Temple (18−37 CE) and presiding officer of the Sanhedrin Court after being appointed by Valerius Gratus, Roman governor of Judaea. Caiaphas was a Sadducee, and like most of those belonging to that tendency among the Jews, he supported Temple worship and the Roman authorities. As an appointee of the Roman governor, he sought to please his masters and can in no sense be considered an independent actor. The story that he was somehow involved in the trial and arrest of Jesus is only mentioned in two of the gospels (Matthew and John).
