Mary, the Mother of Jesus

Mary is mentioned only fleetingly in the writings of early theologians like Irenaeus and mostly to contrast her obedience to God with Eve’s disobedience. The figure of Mary began to take on greater significance when the Council of Ephesus named her the “God-bearer" in AD 431. The Council’s decision underscored the fact that Mary was more important in the East than in the West at this time.
