Condemned to death by order of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judaea province, Jesus was crucified (circa 30−33 CE). On the Sunday following Jesus’ death on the cross, women closely associated with his movement visited the tomb. These women probably included Mary of Magdala, one of Jesus’ most important supporters. The women found the tomb empty and had a vision in which a messenger or angel tells them that Jesus has risen. The resurrection and the visions following it (especially those experienced by St. Peter) were fundamental in creating belief in Jesus as Lord.
