An ecumenical council is a meeting of Church officials and theologians representing the whole Catholic Church convened to discuss and settle matters of Church doctrine and practice. The title of specific councils refers not only to the meeting itself but also to the outcome of the discussion or deliberation. Important ecumenical councils include: - Lateran Councils, AD 1139, 1179
- First Council of Lyons, AD 1245
- Second Council of Lyons, AD 1274
- Council of Pisa, AD 1409
- Council of Constance, AD 1414–1418
- Council of Pavia-Siena, AD 1423–1424
- Council of Basel, AD 1431–1449
