Monasteries

A monastery is an autonomous place of residence for members of a religious community or religious order, generally under a common rule and characterized by celibacy, poverty, and obedience. The following monasteries were among the most important founded during the medieval period.

  • Monte Cassino, Italy, founded AD 529
  • Abbey of Kells, Ireland, founded AD 554
  • Benedictine Abbey, at Cluny, France, founded AD 909–910
