The following schisms have occurred during Christianity: - Eastern Schism
- Great Schism
The first major schism occurred in the eleventh century when the Church divided into the Eastern (Greek) and Western (Latin) branches. This was known as the Eastern Schism.
The other schism (known as the Great, Western, or Papal Schism) arose when three rival popes were elected, each backed by different secular rulers. This schism ended with the Council of Constance and the election of Martin V in 1417.
